Societal Markers : A failed pursuit of status

I have been thinking about this quote since it popped up last nite. This morning I stumbled upon Societal Markers, a word that is possibly the reason why most remain timid souls.

What are Societal Markers: These are observable indicators that reflect a particular trend, individual status, or change at an individual or society level. They are used to understand the functioning and well-being of individuals and societies. What is hidden in this term is, it promotes status which may not even be essential for an individual and is being looked up as a measure of success as part of the society.

Most individuals are too lazy to think of their own and look up to these measures to live their lives. They look for validation, approval, acceptance, status, economic security, predictability, cultural norms, family pressures, self-esteem, social identity, and the perceived path to happiness, influenced by media, and hence live as per these societal measures.

Most of these societal measures are false status symbols once we look closely. It starts from childhood, as we go to school, and is further endorsed by the career we choose, and the place we live. the house we own, the cars we drive, and the vacations we take, the books we read, where we invest, and how we think,

As I read the above quote Societal Measures are the biggest reason behind the cold and timid life. Few MEN IN THE ARENA who don't chase these Societal Measures are the ones who pursue the path of doing things DARING GREATLY.
